Geelong is known as the City by the Bay and finally it's earned that name.  The waterfront region is a credit to Geelong lifting it to visitor standards comparable throughout Australia.  Eastern Beach has been rebuilt and now has a cafe, a restaurant, and a takeaway.  Surrounded by parkland Eastern Beach offers a haven for swimmers with a childrens pool with central fountain and a larger swimming pool with slides and diving pools.  It's like a seawater swimming complex.

I have been re-exploring my childhood in Geelong this week visiting the beaches of Rippleside, St Helens and Western Beach.  Little known to people out of Geelong theses beaches have been regular swimming beaches for many decades to the local residents.  The beaches have had their ups and downs as Geelong grew and grew but seem to be getting some much needed work to bring them back to their formal glory.

Must Try Dining

Wintergarden Cafe Bar
The Wintergarden offers a light, open atmosphere in a 150 year old building.  The Wintergarden cafe is situated in a heritage building with very high ceilings and a mezzanine floor right around.  You sit amongst tall pillars at wooden or iron tables.  The food and cake are inexpensive, it's fully licensed and offers entertainment on some weekends.

Must Try Attraction

Geelong's Eastern Beach
An art-deco swimming pool and park complex at the far end of the Waterfront.  Built in the 1930s it is only recently that it has returned to it's former glory. A recent upgrade of the huge sea bathing complex and youngsters' pool, surrounding parkland, pavilions and fountain has added to the area's popularity.   more on attractions
